Dorian Update

Dear Missionaries,

Since I last wrote, hurricane Dorian has intensified.  It is now a category 3 storm again and appears headed to touch the North Carolina coast in the Wilmington/Kinston area sometime later this evening.  Fortunately, all coastal missionaries are now safely in the RDU area. But, this does mean we could see some advance high winds and flash flooding around the state with possible power outages later this afternoon and this evening.

I would ask that all of you be in your apartments today by noon and plan to stay in them until noon on Friday. If you have important service obligations to render until noon, do so and then get back to your apartment as close to noon as possible.  That said, if wind and rain are picking up in your area today before noon, please play it safe and do not go out at all.  Under no circumstances, unless approved by me, should anyone be out in severe storm conditions for the next 36 hours.

We will proceed with the Sisters Conference in Apex.  A few sisters may experience a little rain on the drive in this morning but will be ok. Drive safely.  We are making arrangements for the sisters from the farthest areas, those located in Goldsboro, Fayetteville, and Fayetteville West to stay one or two nights in the RDU area rather than drive back to their areas after the conference.

A few things to remember:
  1. If conditions are clear and safe this morning, you might go top off your cars with gas.
  2. I am working with Elder White this morning to put the balance of your monthly funds on your card today.
  3. If you lose power in your area for an extended time, stay put. There may be downed power lines and other dangers.  In addition to the extra groceries you were instructed to buy, you have food and flashlights in your 72 Hour kit.
  4. In case of power outage, keep your phones charged as much as possible today.
  5. Within four hours of the storm passing (probably first thing Friday morning), please contact your zone leaders and Stake Mission Support Specialist couple to report in on your condition.
  6. Do your best to stay missionary productive during this time: organize and review the area book, check on people you are teaching via text and messenger, do additional personal and  companionship study and planning, learn how to use family history tools for your teaching and proselyting, etc..

Remember, when we are prepared and obedient, we need not fear. All will be well.

Faithfully,

President Matthew S.  Holland
